1/8/14 January Fishing in Islamorada

We’ve had some great fishing trips here the past few weeks in Islamorada. Some days with windy weather, so I was definitely glad to be on my 36′ Jersey Devil, Bn’M II. The last couple days I fished however I helped shoot a tv show for SFTV, and we managed to release 6 sailfish over the two days and keep 4 blackfin tuna all around 10 lbs. We are “reef fishing” this time of year, a lot of kite fishing with live bait as well as some bottom fishing. We consider it the same thing as “Deep Sea” and “offshore”. In addition to the sailfish being the trophy fish, we’ve caught a handful of real nice mutton snapper, with some pushing 12 lbs. There’s also been some king mackerel in the mix. We caught a big bull shark last week as well as a juvenile hammerhead shark, both which were released. The next month we should have should action with sailfish, mackerel, wahoo, shark, and snapper. 10-5-13 early October fishing in Islamorada Florida Keys

It’s that time of year here now where we catch a little bit of everything. We are starting to focus more on reef fishing compared to the summer and early fall months where we head further offshore. The last few days in Islamorada we have caught a lot of different species of fish. One day on the hump we caught a bunch of blackfin tuna and skipjack tuna, as well as a big dusky shark. Then we came back to the reef and caught a few snappers, king mackerels, cero mackerels, and yellowjacks. The next day we went to the hump but the tuna’s didn’t cooperate as well as expected, but we did catch a couple and turned one into a nice hammerhead shark which we released. We also caught some nice snapper while bottom fishing on the way in to the reef. Back near the reef we fished a couple wrecks and caught a bunch of yellowjack and then released a lot of bonitos and rainbow runners. Yesterday we went out swordfishing, and we missed one sword bite, but did find some dolphin (mahi mahi) on the way home and caught 8 or 10 and kept 6 of them. The next few weeks we should start seeing a lot of more king mackerel, black grouper, sailfish, and snapper while fishing the reef and wrecks.

8-24-13 Islamorada Fishing Offshore

The Mahi bite has been incredible this August while fishing in Islamorada. Now it definitely is getting later in the season for them, but we should still have action with them throughout September. There was a week or so of nice big fish (slammers), 20 – 40 lbers, and the past week we have had big numbers of small/medium size fish, 3 – 10 lbers (schoolies and gaffers)…[sociallocker] The blackfin tuna bite picked up about 2 weeks ago as well, it was definitely a little slow before that. We catch the blackfins on the humps (big under water sea moutains), and when they show up so do the SHARKS! We caught dusky and silky sharks last week, the biggest pushing 300 lbs. The daytime swordfish bite has been on and off this year so far. We’ve had a few good trips with multiple fish, a few trips with single fish, and then some trips with no action at all. But that’s the name of the game when trying for big ones! The reef has still been active with lots of yellowtail snapper and a couple mutton snapper mixed in as well. 7-13-13 Islamorada Fishing Report

It’s been a mixed bag of fish while offshore fishing in islamorada lately. The mahi bite has been hit and miss the last couple of weeks, with some good days and then some slow days. Usually this time of year it’s consistent but it’s been a little on the difficult side as a whole. The hump has been providing action with tunas though, including both blackfins and skipjacks. On the bottom we caught a nice 30 lb amberjack too the other day. The Reef Fishing has definitely been the best actoin lately, with lots of yellowtail snapper, a few mutton and mangrove snapper, and some bull sharks. We’ve been out a handful of days for broadbill swordfish, and our last trip we caught 2 fish. The trips prior we lost a few, so it was good to get back on the board. The swordfishing should only get better and better as we get into the Fall.

6-26-13 Islamorada Deep Sea Fishing Report

I’ve been slammed with islamorada deep sea fishing charters the past couple of weeks and wanted to give you an honest report of what’s really been biting out there! On the reef there’s been lots of yellowtail snapper, as well as a few big mutton snapper mixed in. Offshore the mahi mahi bite has been decent to good overall. Some days are a little better than others, but we’ve been averaging about 20 fish a trip, a couple big fish (20-30 lbs) and the rest will be schoolies and a few gaffers. On the hump we have been doing very well on blackfin tuna, not a lot of big ones, but plenty of footballs in the 4-5 lb range. The daytime swordfish bite has been a little hit and miss, but we did catch 2 swords last week, both over 100 lbs, and we released a mako shark close to 200 lbs.
