6-3-13 Fishing in Islamorada

Well the busy season in Islamorada still continues into June. I haven’t had as much time as I’d like to post my Islamorada Fishing Reports, but here’s what I have to say for the last few weeks! We’ve had some incredible mahi fishing this year. Not every day has been great, but we’ve caught more nice size fish cows and nice bulls (15-30 lbs) this season in a month than I did all of last year! The Reef Fishing has also been great lately! We have been catching plenty of yellowtail snapper, a few mutton snappers, lots of vermillion snapper, and a few black groupers. The Permit on the wrecks have been a little tricky, but we out smarted this one a few days ago with a live crab. Offshore the Swordfish had my number for a few trips in a row, but yesterday we turned the tables on the them and caught and released 2 fish. We had 2 bites on 7 drifts. They weren’t monsters, one about 40 and one about 60 lbs. The blackfin tuna have been thin this year so far. We caught a handful of wahoo lately, some on debris offshore and one trolling about 10 days ago. As we get into summer we will continue to go offshore for mahi, tuna, and swordfish. The reef should still provide action, but if the water gets really clean (as it does often in the summer) the fish do get tougher to catch. 5/27/13 Hard winds in the end of May

Well the wind is howling today and forecast too for several days but not stopping us from catching fish!  We caught 2 big tarpon last night in the memorial day weekend insanity while onlookers on waverunners circled us.  And I mean 2 tarpon at once – a double header!  That doesn’t happen too often but we were lucky enough to land both fish.  Today fishing was slow around town we had plenty of mullet we caught before daybreak but couldn’t get the fish going really even though we found them in several places.  Just not a bunch around like there was and they are kind of transitioning from mullet mania too crabs.  We did get one on the bottom though a big 100 lb florida keys tarpon, plus a bull shark and a few nurse sharks.  Some backcountry action tomorrow is in the books!

5/19/13 Fishing Islamorada for Tarpon in May

Still be catching lots of big tarpon in the florida keys.  We caught 2 nice fish today fishing locally channel 2 and channel 5 bridges.  Bait was tough the last several days but still had our shots at tarpon every day though they were limited.  Before that fishing was still pretty great with multi fish most every trip.  The may fishing islamorada should get better as the busy weekend subsides, we saw lots and lots of fish today though they were not biting great but with less boat traffic and hooks in the water that can change!  If you want to catch tarpon in islamorada the end of may and june can still be very good times to go, june is especially good because much less pressure and still at the end of ‘prime time’.  I have dates available in june and lots of evenings available, I can do later evenings fishing with live crabs too and that often is the hot ticket.  Shoot me an email if you want to catch some may florida keys tarpon.

5-12-13 Fishing in Islamorada

Hey Everybody! Sorry I’ve been slacking on my Islamorada Fishing Report the last few weeks. My excuse it that I have been fishing 6 days a week and haven’t had much time to get on the computer. The overall bite has been pretty good though! We have had some really good days on mahi and a handful of decent days. The reef fishing for snapper has been great too. We have been catching 30 to 40 yellowtail snapper most trips, and a couple mutton snapper have been mixed in to. We’ve caught a few swordfish the last few weeks as well. One trip yielded two broadbill and the other two trips both produced one. As we approach the summer months we will focus more on mahi and deep water bottom fish, like this barrel fish we caught the other day, as well as swordfish. We also had a great day finding a piece of wood two weeks ago where we caught 7 wahoo up to 15 lbs off of it as well as 20 mahi up to 22 lbs.
